The Dartboard Rally

Bringing Motorcycle Rallying Closer to Everyone

The Dartboard Rally began with a simple idea: throw a dart at a map and host an approachable motorcycle rally wherever it lands.

The event was designed as a fun, low-pressure introduction to motorcycle rallying. It welcomed first-time rally riders as well as experienced competitors looking for a relaxed day in the saddle. Rather than using an elaborate theme or complicated scoring system, the Dartboard Rally focused on straightforward bonus locations, manageable route planning, sightseeing, and friendly competition.

Riders received a rally pack containing the available bonus locations, requirements, and scoring information. The opening group of bonuses consisted of mandatory stops. A rider who successfully visited every mandatory location, submitted the required photographic evidence, and returned to the finish within the 12-hour time limit qualified as a finisher.

Additional optional bonuses were available for riders interested in earning more points and competing for a podium position. Regardless of their competitive strategy, every rider was still required to complete the mandatory stops.

The result was a rally in which participants could choose their own level of challenge. New riders had an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of route planning, time management, bonus documentation, and rally strategy. Experienced riders could build a more ambitious route and test their efficiency against fellow competitors.

There were no tricks, hidden “gotcha” moments, or unnecessarily complicated scoring themes. The purpose of the Dartboard Rally was to provide a clear and enjoyable experience that allowed riders to concentrate on the ride itself.

Most importantly, the rally was about having fun. Participants discovered new places, challenged themselves, met fellow riders, and returned with stories to tell. Whether a rider’s goal was to pursue a podium finish or successfully complete a first rally, the Dartboard Rally offered an accessible and rewarding day of motorcycle rallying.

How the Rally Worked

Several days before the event, registered riders received a rally pack containing the bonus list and supporting information.

The first bonuses listed in the rally pack were mandatory. To qualify as a finisher, riders were required to:

• Visit every mandatory bonus location.

• Complete the requirement at each location.

• Take and submit the required photograph.

• Return to the designated finish within the 12-hour rally period.

Optional bonuses were also provided for riders who wanted to earn additional points and compete against the rest of the field.

Riders were given instructions for obtaining or preparing the rally flag used in their bonus photographs.

Rider and Motorcycle Requirements

Participants were required to comply with the following safety and eligibility requirements:

• A DOT-approved helmet, or a helmet meeting a higher recognized standard, had to be worn whenever a rider was seated on the motorcycle, whether the motorcycle was moving or stationary.

• Each rider was required to possess a current and valid driver’s license with the appropriate motorcycle endorsement.

• Each motorcycle was required to have current registration.

• Riders were required to carry current proof of liability insurance for the motorcycle being ridden.

• Auxiliary fuel was permitted, but the motorcycle’s total fuel capacity could not exceed 11.5 gallons.​

The Dartboard Rally was governed by the Uniform Rally Rules except where those rules were specifically modified by the Dartboard Rally requirements.

What the Entry Fee Supported

The $85 entry fee did not include lodging or dinner. A significant portion of the fee was used to cover event insurance, which has become increasingly difficult and expensive for rally organizers to obtain. The remainder helped cover the essential administrative and logistical expenses required to conduct the event.

Keeping the entry fee affordable was an important part of making the Dartboard Rally accessible to both new and experienced riders.
